Lesson 11 of 14
In Progress

Expectation 10 You should expect to be in control of your life and understand what is happening to you

You are the expert on your own life. Regardless of your age, health status, or living situation, you have the right to make decisions about your care, your time, and your future.

Too often, older adults are left out of conversations about their own health, finances, or life plans—as if they’re no longer capable of understanding or deciding. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. You should expect to be fully informed, involved, and respected in every decision that affects you.

Being in control doesn’t mean doing everything on your own—it means being at the center of your own story. Whether it’s deciding on medical treatments, choosing where and how you live, or expressing your preferences for daily routines, you deserve clear explanations, honest conversations, and choices that reflect your values.

Even when facing changes in independence or health, you still have a say. Your wishes matter. Your voice should guide your path.

Action Plan

1. Ask Questions Until You Understand
If something doesn’t make sense—whether in a doctor’s office, a legal document, or a care plan—ask for it to be explained in plain language. Don’t be afraid to say, “Can you go over that again?”

2. Make a Personal Plan
Write down your preferences for care, living arrangements, and end-of-life wishes. Share them with your loved ones and care providers. Advance directives and health care proxies can help ensure your choices are honored.

3. Involve People You Trust
Choose someone who respects your wishes to support you in decision-making, if needed. But remember—you are still in the driver’s seat.

4. Advocate for Yourself
Speak up if you feel left out of a decision or pressured into something that doesn’t feel right. It’s okay to pause, ask for time, or get a second opinion.

5. Stay Informed
Keep learning about your health, rights, and available options. Information is power—and it helps you stay confident and in control.

You are not a bystander in your own life. Expect clarity. Expect respect. Expect to lead your life with understanding and choice—every step of the way.
