Judaism – Overview

This course delves into how Jewish principles guide individuals and communities in nurturing the well-being, dignity, and wisdom of older adults.

Through this course, participants will:

  • Gain insight into Jewish texts, including the Torah, Talmud, and other rabbinical writings, that emphasize the importance of respecting and valuing seniors.
  • Understand the role of elders in Jewish history, culture, and family life as bearers of wisdom and tradition.
  • Explore Jewish lifecycle events, holidays, and rituals with a focus on their relevance to seniors.
  • Learn practical ways to support aging parents and grandparents, rooted in the Jewish concepts of kibbud av va’em (honoring parents) and gemilut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness).
  • Discuss contemporary issues faced by Jewish seniors, including aging in place, caregiving, and community inclusion, and how Jewish organizations address these challenges.

Designed for learners of all faiths and backgrounds, this course emphasizes the universal values of respect, intergenerational connection, and ethical responsibility, while celebrating the unique contributions of Judaism to understanding and supporting seniors.

Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for Jewish perspectives on aging and practical tools for fostering dignity and respect for elders in their own communities.
